![]() ![]() ![]() Any time the paranormal does show up, it’s contained to unimaginative scare sequences before reality sets back in. THE MIDNIGHT WAVE RYAN ADAMS MOVIEWhile Director Ahn is adamant about his movie being of the horror genre, and he has frequent sequences backing up his case, it’s rare to see the uncanny interact with fact. ![]() There is a hard line between the real and supernatural worlds in Arang. So-young naturally deduces the current murders have to do with the past, but with Joon-ho dead and Min-jung presumably dead as well, it’s unclear who could be carrying out the revenge now. The girlfriend of the deceased, Min-jung ( Kim Hae-in ), then disappeared a year later without a trace it’s rumored she killed herself. The mystery in Arang becomes more complicated and eerie after it’s revealed the first two victims not only knew each other, they, along with their friends, killed a teenage boy named Joon-ho ( Baek Min-hyun ) at a rural salt storehouse ten years ago. So-young and her new partner Hyun-ki ( Lee Dong-wook ), a young transferee from Forensics, now have what looks to be a spree killer on their hands. What makes an already strange death even stranger is the addition of a second victim another man later died from the same cause. And the reason for his death was a heart attack caused by prussic acid. In the 2006 crime-chiller Arang, a man’s charred corpse is discovered in the remains of a house fire, but his autopsy reveals he died before the fire broke out. Homemade folklore often played a role as well, and filmmaker Ahn Sang-hoon looked to a classic Korean story for inspiration when putting together his debut.Ī new and disturbing case awaits Detective Min So-young ( Song Yoon-ah ). During this heyday of “K-Horror,” there was a burst of spectral yarns centered around cursed objects, haunted technology, and most of all, revenge. The success of The Ring inspired Japan’s nearest neighbors to tell their own ghost stories, and South Korea certainly didn’t waste the opportunity in the mid-2000s. ![]() ![]() There is no personality whatsoever in the film's lead character. The filmmakers had a simple story to tell but instead of telling it simply and elegantly with heart, they opt for a sitcom-esque pileup of comedic action sequences and highly dull characters. Favoring a standard cross country journey over the more thematic and intimate depth we've seen in Paranorman and Coraline, MIssing Link is an occasionally humorful but frustratingly dull film. It is deeply saddening to criticize a clear labor of love, but Missing Link is a significant step down from the narratives we've seen from the studio thus far. ![]() With that being said, it's still worth a watch on the big screen for any animation aficionado.Īfter the masterpiece that was Kubo and the Two Strings, it was perhaps unfair to expect the next Laika film to measure up. Laika missing link movie#Missing Link is a cute, mostly harmless, mostly entertaining movie that just doesn't have the same ambitions and level of execution that previous Laika films have had. Laika was treading financial water with excellent movies, and anything "less than" seems like it could possibly tip the independent animation production company over for good. It's an amusing, lower tier animated movie for Laika, but I'm worried that there might not be more of these movies the way they're going at the box-office. The action set pieces, usually appearing at a regular clip with each new location change, are fun and have their clever moments, like a capsizing ship that reminded me of the spinning Inception hallway. From a visual standpoint, it's beautiful with vibrant colors and fluid animation that has become indistinguishable from CGI nowadays. There isn't a lot of depth here and, surprisingly, more crass jokes aimed at a younger audience than their earlier output. It's a sweet story but not fully emotionally engaging because the characters are fairly simplistic. ![]() It's a heartfelt buddy comedy about a Bigfoot creature (voiced by Zach Galfianakis) that seeks out mentorship from a dashing adventurer (Hugh Jackman). Missing Link is probably their least successful big screen effort yet, though that still means it's only perfectly fine rather than great-to-amazing. They've built up enough trust that I will see anything that they attach their name to. The stop-motion animation wizards at Laika have made some of the most charming and visually impressive movies of the last few years, including The Box Trolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and ParaNorman. ![]() ![]()

Tamera ANSWERS to movie quotes: #1 The Notebook (This is a love/hate movie for me ) Can’t wait to see how many of the movie quotes you knew! It didn’t ask for a brief visit to a temple, or a small votive offering of food or coin, or a few prayers every now and then. This God that she worshiped consumed her. It was as though every waking hour of the day she was devoted to pleasing her God by serving others. “Rather than remain a sealed jar, she sought only to pour herself out to others. What movie or novel do you find “quotable?” Perhaps it’s a scene you remember or a section of dialogue from the book.Ī novel quote for me is from A Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers: It’s the same reason we watch a movie we’ve already seen over and over again. Because I want to be able to go back to those scenes and experience those emotions again. When I read a novel, I tend to underline sections much like a textbook. What makes a quote so memorable, do you think? Or a piece of narrative-”For who could ever learn to love…a beast”-so vivid in our memory? “My heart is, and always will be, yours.” “I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how.” “No, I don’t think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. I admit it… Watching movies is one of my favorite ‘treats’ after long stints of writing. ![]() |
